Wenger praises Francis Coquelin for his form

Every club is having at least one player who plays an important role in every season and for Liverpool this credit goes to 24-year-old Frenchman Francis Coquelin who has been impressive for it throughout the current league season. Some of his significant performances include his stand-out efforts against Manchester City and not to forget his hard work helped Gunners equalized the weekend game with Manchester United that helped them securing their third position on the board. Since there position is still neck to neck with Red Devils, they need to win their next clash with Sunderland at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday night to ensure they will be among top three on the board. If we look at who was impressive last Sunday, it is obviously him who could not only stand out himself from rest of the team but as well proved that decision to play with the same squad was correct. Even manager Arsene Wenger feels Coquelin is having a long career for Gunners which could have been more glorious had he came here in January itself at £40 million rather coming back from loan at Charlton.

Coquelin is indeed the product of Arsenal’s youth academy and worked immensely hard to improve himself to this level and Wenger feels it’s him that made everyone surprised to see their form in last few games. Talking about the contract extension, which Coquelin has agreed to, 65-year-old Frenchman said, “The world has changed. The appreciation today of the quality of a player is just down with the money you spend. If we had bought Coquelin at Christmas for £40m, everyone would say ‘What a signing.’ I am sorry he didn’t cost any money, he is still a good player. What is a player worth today? Nobody knows really.

“I just wanted to say that if we had bought, nobody would complain that he was a good player.”

Adding if he is enough skilled to become one of the regular in A-team, Wenger added, “Nobody would dispute that his performances have been convincing and that he is ready for a fight even if somebody comes in. He has shown he has the capacity to play for us and play a big part in the success of the team. I extended his contract, that means I believe in him.”

“We have depth in the squad, and the rest will be decided in the summer. We need first to keep our players. I respect everybody’s opinion, but at the end of the day it’s important we keep the core of the team together and if we can add we will add, but we work on it and the less we talk the better it is,” he added on his summer targets.
